Director of Fruitvale Station and Creed, Ryan Coogler hosted an event earlier this year where he surprised the crowd with an appearance by special guest, J. Cole. The two talked about issues concerning the African American community. This included but was not limited to police brutality and black-on-black violence. Coogler and Cole also had a very introspective exchange in which they discussed different ways they can use their resources to better the communities that mirror where they come from.
The people living in communities that are affected by poverty and violence are forgotten and often times, their stories are never told. Given their circumstances, it is difficult for them to rise above their living conditions and unfortunately, the inhabitants living in these communities are usually people of color. It's already difficult existing in the country as a person of color and the added stress of our environments make it even worse.
I understand it's hard to do right when everything around you is negative. I understand that it's difficult to see yourself being successful when it's hard to find successful people that look like you. This interview can spark that fire in us to give each other hope. No matter what we go through, just remember that there's light at the end of the tunnel. Just keep pushing y'all! One love.
